Efficient backup?

Currently I use rsnapshot (which again uses rsync) for backup purposes. This is not a bad tool, but wouldn't it be more efficient to backup files as they are changed? A backup service could use inotify to keep track of which files have changed since the last backup, and only include these files in the daily differential backup. Does such a tool already exist?

Dennis Møllegaard Pedersen has suggested that I take a look at Box Backup, and Erik Trolle has suggested that I take a look at rdiff-backup. As far as I can see, neither of them rely on the operating system to tell them which files have changed.
